Smart phones, laptops, TVs, iPads… The list of electronic devices that we use on a regular basis keeps getting longer and longer. While these devices are helpful for communication, education and entertainment purposes, these seemingly (or maybe not) harmless devices do pose a postural risk and physical stress on our body. No, not because they are too heavy to hold or lift. Rather, without moving, take note of your neck and back position while you are reading this post. If I had to guess what you looked like I would say slouched back, rounded shoulders and flexed neck. While sitting or standing in this position, certain muscles tend to tighten while others tend to weaken from disuse. This leads to pain, discomfort, altered mobility. I am not here to tell you to toss these devices in a trash or lock them up and throw away the key. But rather I am here to give you a few tips to help prevent pain caused by these devices.
1. Take a break! Whether those are short breaks throughout the work day, longer breaks when you get home from work or even doing a digital detox once a week, take some time to put those devices away.
2. The 20-20-20 rule states that for every 20 minutes that you are using one of these devices, take 20 seconds to look 20 feet ahead of you.
3. Get up and go for a digital free walk! Grab a friend, coworker or take some time to yourself to stretch out and get moving.
4. By simply raising your phone closer to eye level, you can significantly reduce the stress on your neck!
5. See your chiropractor to help treat any stiffness, soreness or tightness that you may be experiencing.
If you are experiencing any discomfort that does not seem to be going away, you can always book an appointment with a healthcare professional to assess the problem. Not only will you receive treatment for pain relief but you will also receive additional tips and tricks to help prevent and combat any pain.
