Backpack 101
Backpacks are essential for helping us carry our books, lunches and devices but if used incorrectly, they can lead to injury. Between the added pressure on your neck and shoulders and the extra weight, backpack related injuries can cause numbness in the upper limb, lead to poor posture and can also contribute to neck pain and headaches.
Luckily, these injuries are easily preventable with a few simple tricks.
1. Your backpack should have padded shoulder straps, back strap as well as a hip and waist strap.
2. Your backpack should have several pockets to distribute the weight of the contents.
3. Your backpack should be made of a lightweight material to prevent additional and unnecessary pounds. And when packed, your backpack should not exceed 15% of your body weight.
4. The heaviest items should be packed towards the bottom of the bag.
5. Only pack what is needed! No one wants to be carrying unnecessary weight on their back all day!
