Migraines associated with concussion may not start until 1-2 weeks after trauma and can persist for up to 3 months. However some patients can experience chronic migraines after sustaining a concussion.

There are 3 categories of migraines resulting from post concussion syndrome.
- Physiologic
- Vestibulocochlear
- Cervicogenic
Cerivcogenic migraines are associated with neck pain, and can be significantly reduced via chiropractic adjustments.
Physiologic, and vestibulocochlear migraines can present with more neurologic presentation such as light/sound sensitivity, dizziness/vertigo, double vision, nausea, and balance issues to name a few. For these two types, vision therapy, and rest (with flare ups) are the most beneficial in terms of migraine reduction.
Studies have shown that in patients with post-concussion syndrome suffering from light sensitivity and migraines, wearing dark coloured/tinted lenses were corrected with improvement of migraines in 85% of patients. Wearing sunglasses can benefit when outdoors, but wearing them in doors can add to ocular strain, and increased visual processing demands. Wearing coloured lenses indoors, can filter out wavelengths of light that trigger migraines.
