Erectile Dysfunction (ED)

Defined as difficulty with initiation or sustaining an erection that’s firm enough for penetration.
ED can occur on occasion without concern, however, ED that is progressive or routine with intercourse, should be addressed.
Impacting more than 30 million men, most common reasons occur due to:
- reduced blood flow to the penis - As much as 40% of men with heart disease can develop ED
- this can be due to inflammation from smoking, diet, stress (atherosclerosis, cardiovascular disease (blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, Clogged blood vessels (atherosclerosis)
- damaged nerves (pudendal neuropathy)
- mental/emotional stress
- medication (ie blood pressure medication & anti-depressants)
- surgery (in particular prostatectomy)
- neurological diseases
- pelvic Floor Dysfunction (muscle tension & neuropathy)
- smoking, Recreational drugs & Alcohol
- hormone & thyroid concerns
ED can be an early sign of a more serious health problem. Finding and treating the reason for ED is a vital first step.
